The Brisbane suburb of Upper Mount Gravatt is located approx. 12 kilometres south east of the Brisbane CBD. It is surrounded by the neighbouring suburbs of Mount Gravatt, Mount Gravatt East, Mansfield, Nathan, Wishart, MacGregor, and Eight Mile Plains, and takes up an approximate area of 4.8 kms squared.
Its eastern boundary is bordered by Newnham Road, while its south eastern boundary is bounded by the Pacific Motorway as well as the South East Busway. Other main roads that run through the suburb include Logan Road, Kessels Road, Dawson Road, Klumpp Road, Mount Gravatt-Capalaba Road, and more. Upper Mount Gravatt, together with the surrounding suburbs of Indooroopilly, Chermside and Carindale have been described as a mini central business district.
The suburb of Upper Mount Gravatt has been a major centre, outside of the Brisbane CBD, for a long time, especially to the southern suburbs of Brisbane. Historically speaking, Upper Mount Gravatt, as a suburb, really matured during the 1960s and 1970s. It was officially named Upper Mount Gravatt in 1969,
But really it started to become its own suburb in 1929 when the local primary school, Upper Mount Gravatt primary school, was opened.
During the 1920s, Upper Mount Gravatt, which was originally part of Mount Gravatt, was distributed with soldier settlement farms. The area was quite rural with a number of pig and poultry farms, and its social centre was the showgrounds on Logan Road. There was an increase in new housing during the 1950s due to the continued housing development in Mount Gravatt as well as an increase in car ownership. Garden City opened up on Logan Road in 1970, further boosting the population of the suburb. In fact, in 1947, Upper Mount Gravatt only had a population of 921, but in 1976, that number significantly increased to over 9000 residents.
